The World Uses a Variety of Different Energy Sources

The world relies on a variety of energy sources. In 2018 fossil fuels, like gas, oil and coal, made up over 81 percent of the energy consumed. Renewables, including solar power, wind power, biomass and hydroelectricity, account for 14 percent. Nuclear energy is 5 percent. Different countries utilize different sources of energy to meet environmental and economic requirements.

Nature’s energy is available in a variety of forms such as wind, sun, waves, and ocean. These sources of energy can be transformed into more practical forms of energy, like electricity or heat, once they are harnessed. These sources are non-renewable resources of energy when they are exhausted.

The environment is damaged due to a wide range of fossil fuels as well as some other energy sources that aren’t renewable. Mining oil, for instance can devastate the planet’s virgin forests. Fracking (hydraulic fracturing) could cause earthquakes and water pollution. The combustion of coal releases carbon dioxide, which contributes to global warming.

Fortunately some of the most promising sources of energy are renewable and sustainable. Wind, solar and hydropower could generate, for instance electricity without having to dig for new sources.

Tidal and Wave Power are two more sustainable energy sources that are gaining popularity. However, to be used on a large scale these technologies require effective distribution networks. This requires the use of non-renewable energies to build these networks. As a result, these sources are not yet sufficient to meet the majority of our energy requirements. It is important to keep in mind that the cost of renewable energy equipment have dropped dramatically in recent years and that efficiency is increasing.
